Waiting list simulator — a simpler version: layout options

Four layout directions for a version of the UK liver waiting list simulator that someone with no prior knowledge of liver allocation could use: adjust a few things, see the effect, compare options without being overwhelmed. Each direction has a desktop page and a phone mock-up. They are static mock-ups on the existing engine's premise; nothing here runs a simulation.

OPTION 1

Levers and picture

Five plain-language levers on the left; one picture on the right: 100 people a year after joining the list, with the UK figure beside each count. Pin as A, change something, and a compare strip appears below.

Most direct for "adjust and see". Animation is a button, not the landing view.

OPTION 2

Start with a question

A gallery of six questions, each changing one thing with two or three preset versions shown side by side, a one-paragraph reading, a "why?" and range bars. "Ask your own question" leads to free play.

Lowest barrier for a first visit; matches the "change one thing" approach to comparisons.

OPTION 3

Story scroll

Six chapters down one page: the list, livers arrive, a rule decides, a year later, your choices against the UK now, go further. Each adds one idea and one control, and choices carry through.

Teaches the system while it is used; overlaps with the existing introduction tour.

OPTION 4

Two worlds side by side

World A is the UK now; world B carries one change. Same compact settings, a mini list view each, the outcome pictures, and a central spine of differences, with paired runs.

Comparison is the page; the clearest demonstration of "same people, same livers".

Shared building blocks

Patterns any of the four would use: three levels of detail (Explore → Adjust → Everything), the anatomy of a lever, outcomes as 100 people, the difference said once, how sure without statistics, plain words first. Open the board →

About the figures

The "UK now" picture (63 transplanted · 24 still waiting · 5 removed · 8 died or became too unwell, per 100 people one year after joining) is the simulator's current UK preset, seeds 1–10, with NHSBT's published figures beside it. Every figure for a changed scenario (more livers, a different rule, the ranges across runs) is an illustrative placeholder until the engine is run for it.
